[paɪ'nɪərəʊ], Sir (seit 1909) Arthur Wing, englischer Dramatiker, * London 24. 5. 1855, ✝ ebenda 23. 11. 1934; schrieb zunächst Farcen, war dann (neben G. B. Shaw) mit seinen sozialen Problemstücken der wichtigste Erneuerer des realistischen englischen Dramas nach 1880. Seine Stücke über die Doppelmoral oder die Frau mit Vergangenheit blieben jedoch viktorianische Vorstellungen verhaftet (u. a. das Erfolgsstück »The second Mrs. Tanqueray«, Uraufführung 1893, gedruckt 1894, das die Kritik Shaws mit »Mrs. Warren's profession« herausforderte).
